San Francisco has character. Whether old haunts or trendy coffee joints, the city has old bones that give it a quintessential charm. That is to say it is the perfect setting for an engagement portrait session, especially for a local couple that lives it’s lore.

We started their session early in the morning, before the crowds and when the sun slowly crept it’s way across Hayes Valley. This trendy little area has an eclectic mix of well known brands and independent business owners creating a patchwork of intrigue in the neighborhood. Linden & Laguna is a wine bar that took over the former iconic champagne bar, The Riddler. You can still appreciate the black hexagon tilework which is exactly what we were looking for in the first portraits.

Down the street we were inspired by the curves in the ironwork and awnings of a nearby apartment building. Simply strolling down the street and chatting about their upcoming day kept our couple feeling at ease. For a little variety with your look, we always recommend bringing a pair of sunglasses to add a cool factor.

Looking for magic in unexpected places was the name of the game, and we found this quaint little staircase in an alley that was sprinkled with autumnal leaves. The contrast of colors and their neutral outfits was a surprising delight.

The smell of fresh coffee filled the air as we approached La Boulangerie, an iconic coffee shop with their signature almond croissant latte. Our couple relaxed in the outdoor seating with flaky croissants and their morning brew while we captured a few more intimate moments.

Across the street is a small park where the cuddles and giggles were plentiful. Finding a location in your favorite city that speaks to you can create wonderful portraits. You don’t have to always go for the most aesthetic, but go with what feels most authentic to your story. Those make the best backgrounds for your portraits and memories.
